Merseytravel set to decide fate of train fleet

A decision on the future of Merseytravel’s train fleet is set to be made today.

Transport chiefs are set to hold the meeting on the £460 million plans behind closed doors amid concerns that the rail network will operate without guards.

Any decision taken will need to be ratified by the Liverpool City Region’s Combined Authority which is due to meet after the Merseyrail discussions.

Workers’ union the RMT will be protesting over the fears that several of their members may be deemed surplus to requirement under the radical new proposal.

Almost 60 trains have operated on Merseyside’s railways since 1977, some of which will be temporarily out of action due to trackbed replacement work taking place in the New Year.
