Prisoners at Walton Prison have smuggled items such as drugs, generic weapons and SIM cards in to HMP Liverpool.
Cannabis, Spice and Knives were among the items seized from prisoners after they were smuggled in to the prison.
Prison bosses have now promised to increase efforts to stop the contraband entering the prison.
In a 12 month period 30 items described as “dangerous or illegal” were confiscated from prisoners.
A total of eight mobile phones and three chargers have been taken from those within the prison during the 12 month period.
Two “samples” of cannabis has been found within the prison alongside four samples of legal high “spice”.
A prison inspection last year suggested that findings of psychoactive substances, store such as spice, were becoming increasingly regular.
It is also understood that a prisoner who died at HMP Altcourse last year had smoked the drug just hours before his death.
A syringe has also been taken from a prisoner at HMP Liverpool in the last year.
A spokeswoman for the prison said: “Governors use sniffer dogs, cell searches and mandatory drugs tests to uncover illicit items and punish those responsible.
“To help crackdown on the distribution of illicit items, staff at HMP Liverpool work closely with the police, sharing information and carrying out joint operations.
“We have also passed laws so that people who smuggle packages over prison walls face up to two years in prison.
“However, it’s clear we need to do more. The Justice Secretary has asked the Ministry of Justice to look at how we can ensure prisons have the right tools in place to tackle this problem.”
