Iconic Liverpool hairdresser Herbert Howe dies

Tributes have been paid following the death of Liverpool hairdresser Herbert Howe.

It has been confirmed that the 72-year-old passed away in the early hours of this morning, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Herbert became an iconic figure as a stylist to the city’s stars as well as opening a number of hair salons across the local area.

“It is with the saddest news our beautiful friend and boss ‘Herbert of Liverpool’ passed away peacefully early hours this morning with his brother and sister, Christine & Ian by his side,” read a statement.

“He fought hard and strong for the past 18 months full of love and courage, together with the support of all his staff, close friends and family.

“We thank you all for your kind words of well wishes and support throughout this ordeal and herbert always appreciated it deeply.

“A special thank you to all the staff at Marie Curie Woolton, who have been amazing these past few months looking after him.

“Herbert is in now back in the arms of his beautiful mother and father ‘Queenie & Frank’.”

In addition to hairdressing, Herbert was a fervent charity fundraiser and also stood to become Mayor of Liverpool in 2012 before withdrawing his bid.

Joe Anderson, the city’s current Mayor, was among those who paid tribute.

“Sad to hear news of the death of Herbert of Liverpool,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Great fundraiser and ambassador for [the] City.

“Less glitter in Liverpool now he’s gone. RIP.”
