Video: Rooney hits wonder strike on Everton FC return

Wayne Rooney marked his second Everton debut in style with a wonder strike.

Fresh from rejoining the Blues after a 13-year absence, the England captain left a lasting impression as Ronald Koeman’s side won their first pre-season friendly.

Rooney opened the scoring as his boyhood club took the lead against Gor Mahia on with a 30-yard goal reminiscent of his iconic 2002 strike against Arsenal.

Although the Tanzanian outfit levelled just two minutes later through Jacques Tuyisenge, Kieran Dowell’s late winner ensured that Everton took the spoils.

“To score for Everton again is a great feeling,” Rooney told evertontv.

“It’s something I’ve been thinking of for the last couple of weeks, once I knew [the move] was happening.

“Thankfully, I’ve done it in today’s game and that 45 minutes will only help.

“I just received the ball from out wide and I was in a bit of space so I took my chance and thankfully it went in. I was pleased with it.

“It’s a good start but I think we have to improve still.

“It’s early days and we knew it would be a tough game in tough conditions but I thought we did well.”
