Liverpool have condemned a ‘racist’ banner of Divock Origi by fans in Genk.
Origi was depicted in an explicit image on the flag, which was spotted in the away section before Wednesday’s Champions League tie at the Luminus Arena.
Anfield officials moved swiftly to have the offending item removed from view as the Belgium international was named a substitute against his boyhood club.
UEFA could impose a fine on the Reds for the banner, which comes six days after they were hit with an £8,500 penalty for pitch invasions in the win over Salzburg.
“Liverpool Football Club condemns the offensive banner displayed in our section of the ground, prior to kick off,” said a club spokesperson.
“To be clear, the image used perpetuated a racist stereotype. This is completely unacceptable.
“We acted swiftly to have the banner removed and we are now working with the local authorities and stadium team in Genk to identify those responsible.
“Any subsequent action will be taken in keeping with our sanctions process.”
Origi earned cult status with the Reds after scoring in last season’s Champions League final against Tottenham as well as the semi-final win over Barcelona.
