Veteran Liverpool coach to join Klopp exodus

John Achterberg is set to join Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool summer exodus.

Achterberg has been Anfield’s long-serving goalkeeper coach but will depart after 15 years’ service when his contract expires at the end of this season.

The Dutchman, who joined the Reds after retiring as a player in 2009, is the fourth member of Klopp’s first-team backroom staff to follow in his footsteps.

Compatriot Pep Lijnders, Peter Krawietz and Vitor Matos all took the decision to join the German in walking away from their roles at the club next month.

“After 15 years at the club, I have decided with a heavy heart to leave LFC,” confirmed Achterberg.

“It has been an unbelievable and great journey for me and my family. I have loved each day working at this amazing club.

“But after a long think I feel it could be right for me to start a new challenge.

“I would like to thank FSG for all the support during those 15 years – Mike Gordon, John Henry, Tom Werner and Billy Hogan.

“It has been a privilege to work for the biggest and greatest club in world football with its amazing supporters.

“Whether they are Scouse or non-Scouse I loved them all worldwide.”

Arne Slot, Klopp’s incoming successor as head coach, will be tasked with finding a replacement for Achterberg alongside the other vacated positions.

It remains unknown whether the 52-year-old’s understudy Jack Robinson or Brazil legend Claudio Taffarel will be retained at the AXA Training Centre.

Several of Slot’s lietenants are heavily tipped to fill the imminent voids including assistant Sipke Hulsoff and head of performance Ruben Peeters.
