A woman has died after an early-morning crash in the Birkenhead Tunnel.
Police were alerted at 12.25am on Sunday following reports that an Audi A3 travelling towards in the Wirral direction had collided with a taxi in the tunnel.
The male driver and female passenger of the Audi sustained multiple injuries and were taken to hospital but the woman, who was in her 20s, passed away.
The taxi driver, a man in his 40s, is also in hospital with serious injuries.
Motorists have been advised to seek alternative routes to the Queensway Tunnel due to police surveying the scene as part of their investigations.
Matrix Inspector Mark Worrell said: “Our thoughts go out to the family of the woman who died and those who were injured in this collision.
“The incident is currently under investigation and I would ask anyone who saw anything prior to the collision which could assist our enquiries to get in touch.
“It is believed that prior to entering the tunnel the Audi had been in collision with another vehicle on the Hunter Street roundabout.
“We are currently examining a number of lines of enquiry.”
