Maupay claims reason behind his Everton failure

Neal Maupay has revealed the reason for his failed Everton spell.

Maupay is set to leave Goodison Park this summer with Marseille having an obligation to buy for around £8.4 million at the end of his season-long loan.

The French forward scored just once in 32 appearances for the Blues before incurring supporters’ ire through multiple jibes on his social media accounts.

He also became caught up in a verbal spat at the start of this season when fans barracked the first team at Euston Station following a 4-0 thrashing by Tottenham.

But Maupay has now claimed that a change in manager did not help him with Sean Dyche succeeding Frank Lampard midway through the 2022/23 season.

“I think pretty much everything, to be honest with you,” he told GiveMeSport.

“The club wasn’t in the right place in terms of the manager because we changed the manager that season. I think the way we were playing didn’t fit my game.

“If you try to play long-ball football and put crosses into a player like me, that doesn’t match my characteristics, so it won’t work.

“I think sometimes it just doesn’t work out. You never know before you join a club or a manager, but it’s part of football.”
