Liverpool withdraw from European Super League

Liverpool have confirmed their withdrawal from the European Super League.

The Premier League champions joined five English other clubs in abstaining from the continental breakaway they all agreed to join just 48 hours earlier.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United also pledged to end their interest in a competition to rival the Champions League.

“Liverpool Football Club can confirm that our involvement in proposed plans to form a European Super League has been discontinued,” read a club statement.

“In recent days, the club has received representations from various key stakeholders, both internally and externally, and we would like to thank them for their valuable contributions.”

Anfield chiefs faced stern opposition on the proposal from fans, who draped banners in protest at owners Fenway Sports Group outside the stadium.

Senior figures within Jurgen Klopp’s side also voiced their disapproval of the plans with a statement declaring, ‘We don’t like it and don’t want it to happen’.

Club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish, now a non-executive director, admitted “I really hope we do the right thing” ahead of Tuesday’s late-night climbdown.

Liverpool’s official watch partner Tribus stated its intention to terminate their relationship with the club as a result of the plot to join the Super League.

Billy Hogan, the club’s CEO, acknowledged in an email to staff following the initial announcement that the proposal would cause ructions within football.

“We know that this announcement has provoked strong feelings within the game and elsewhere,” he wrote.

“But we believe this decision is in the best long-term interests of Liverpool Football Club.

“Importantly, this is the beginning of the journey and we can now start an engagement process with you, supporters and key stakeholders to help shape this process in the right way.”
