UEFA consider Liverpool ‘Super League’ sanctions

Liverpool could face UEFA sanctions for joining the European Super League.

European football’s governing body are weighing up potential punishments for all 12 clubs who agreed to form the proposed breakaway league last Sunday.

Anfield chiefs and their five Premier League counterparts later withdrew from the arrangement in the wake of backlash from fans and first-team staff alike.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are yet to formally abandon tier role in the Super League despite growing pressure from across the footballing world.

However the Reds now run the risk of incurring a punishment for being part of the initial 12-team collective which rapidly unravelled in barely 48 hours.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin hinted in an interview on Wednesday that the federation is exploring potential disciplinary measures against the clubs.

“We have 235 out of 247 clubs on our side … well, we had them, and now we have 244,” Ceferin told Slovenian news outlet 24UR.

“Yesterday I received SMS support from practically all clubs in Europe.

“So now we expect everyone to realise their mistake and suffer the appropriate consequences. We’ll talk about that next week.”

He added: “They know exactly that they made a mistake, they called me and I respect that.

“You have to be big to admit a mistake and that’s why I have more respect for these clubs than for those who insist on something they themselves say doesn’t exist.”
